Hopefully you’re starting to recover from the craziness of holiday eating, spending and family gathering. I’m definitely ready for 2012. If you live in New England, you are probably glad to see 2011 go, along with all of it’s weather emergencies and just plain strangeness. 2012 can only be better, right? Well that’s what I’m going with.

When we were young, and I mean young like 8, Christmastime was magical. As we get older, it becomes a lot of work to make all that magic happen for our own kids. I know I sound a little jaded, but one of the things I’m enjoying these days about the holidays is the time to catch up with family, even if it’s just for a few hours. In my family, many of us live far apart and so we don’t get to see one another very often. It’s nice to look forward to the end of the year knowing we’ll get to see each other again.

For Karen, her kids live in three different cities and she was really happy to have them all home for Christmas this year. Luckily we set aside some time to get these lovely photos while everyone was in one time zone. Even furry Leia got in on the photo action.

Wow, has it really been a whole month since I posted last? Well, that’s because things have been super busy around here. I’m in the middle of a top secret new portrait project that I will be unveiling very soon. This has been keeping me pretty busy in addition to all the normal business and mom stuff. On top of that I’ve had a brainstorm for another project that I’ll be working on over the winter. Keep popping back here for more info.

In the meantime, I want to share an image of this lovely family. One of the first things clients ask me after they schedule their session is, “What do we wear?”. I think this image is a great example of how to dress. Simple clothes in similar colors work best. If you were to book a session with me right now, here are my top five suggestions on how to dress your family:

Have everyone wear dark-washed jeans.

Choose jewel-toned colored shirts, such as emerald green, burnt orange, plum, maroon, and even chocolate brown.

Shirts should be long-sleeved and have no patterns, designs or words.

Accessories are great. Use scarves or jewelry to add interest or another pop of color.

You don’t have to “match”. Not everyone needs to wear the same color. But, if you all choose jewel tones, the colors will go together.

The reason this image works so nicely is because each person has a slightly different shade of the same color. I love it!!

A quick post today to share a recent session with the Eline family. We met at the boathouse at Smith College and, as you can see, the light here in the morning is truly beautiful. Even the clothing was perfect for this location. With each family I photograph, there is always something unique about their dynamic and this with this family it was really clear how much they all adore little Ryleigh. With this image, I think I was able to capture that sentiment.

I like to joke around that when my kids are older, they are going to think they didn’t have a mother. I say this because I’m always the one taking the photos and am never IN the photos. There are lots of images of my kids doing different things like playing soccer or on vacation at the beach or blowing out birthday candles, but really there are very few of these family images where I am part of the photo. And this is why I want to offer some fun ideas for Mother’s Day gifts.

Mother’s Day is May 8th this year and a portrait session is the perfect gift any mom would love. This could be ‘Mommy & Me’ photos of you and your little ones or you could surprise your Mom with portraits of your family. This is also a great option for older siblings because Mom hasn’t had photos of them in a while.

In honor of including Moms in photos, I’m offering two fun Mother’s Day collections. Or you can call me to create a custom collection of your own. Make sure you call right away to reserve your spot. There are only a few sessions available.

Back when I was studying French in Québec (Canada) we went on a class outing to a Cabane à Sucre, Sugar Shack as we say in English. For some reason I was thinking about it on Friday and how fun it would be for the kids to see how maple syrup is made. So we got up early Saturday morning and drove up to the North Hadley Sugar Shack for a breakfast of pancakes, eggs and bacon. We arrived at about 8:15am, which is typically when I might be considering waking up on a Saturday morning. We were lucky to get one of the last seats because by 8:45, there were at least 15 people waiting.

After finishing breakfast, we went into the “Evaporation Room” where they were boiling the sap into Maple Syrup. They even had samples from a fresh batch of syrup. The kids started to get all excited and I had to lift them up to look inside the huge vats of syrup with sweet-smelling steam billowing around us. I realized that we were about to experience the after effects of a maple sugar rush so I got them back outside to the small petting zoo.

After spending some time with the animals we wandered over to a demonstration on how to make maple candy. The small room smelled lovely and started to get really packed with people. Of course, my kids were front and center listening to the nice lady explain how to make the candy. At one point I had to shush my son who is a person who cannot stop asking questions. Honestly, it was a little embarrassing because he kept interrupting her with little tidbits of his own observations. At one point he asked if they made maple candies in the shape of smiley faces.

Finally, I ushered Son & Daughter outside and we went to check out some of the pails where they were collecting sap. I was trying to get some last-minute photos but the kids were not having it. Here I am trying to get some nice images to remember our little trip, but all I hear is “I’m cold” or “I’m bored”. Where’s the love? So I did what any self-respecting parent does when her children aren’t cooperating. I bribed them with cider donuts. And it worked!

Yesterday, I met an amazing woman. Her name is Sarah and she’s 99 years young! Yes, you read that right. She had me smiling the whole time. She’s a real spitfire and lived in New York City, alone, until recently. I give her a lot of credit and of course, I just had to share this image of her.

Can you imagine what Sarah has seen in her 99 years? I can barely believe that the internet is still so young. During this time of year, I often think about what I am thankful for and I love that Sarah put it all into perspective for me. Enjoy what’s important. The rest will fall into place.

Happy Holidays!

I’ve known Laura for a long time now and I’m always so impressed with how calm she is. This young family of five was super easy to work with despite having a five-year old, a two-year old and a newborn. Oh, and did I mention they brought their dog with them too? I hear that people reach a point when they just realize that going with the flow is easier than trying to fight it. I don’t think I’ve quite learned that lesson yet, but I’m working on it.

I got to photograph one of my favorite families last week. A family with four boys, can you believe it? We headed out to King Philip’s Stockade Park (across from Picknelly Field) and let the boys roam free. This is a great spot because the gates are typically closed, which means no cars. And that is perfect for a family portrait. I especially love the view of Springfield from up there. The littlest brother, is only 10 months and wears glasses and, let me tell you, he is a cutie pie – full of personality already! Aren’t they adorable?

There are just three siblings in my family and I have two children of my own. I’ve always been intimidated by large families, but this group was so much fun. These are all cousins, but cousins who spend a good amount of time together. And, for the most part, they are all pretty close in age. Their mothers were amazingly calm. Seriously, I don’t know how they do it. There were seven kids in white shirts and dresses running around near water. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? Well, not this bunch. They were strangely well behaved. Maybe their parents feed them “special” food. Hmmm. Anyway, I had dragged them all around this park, made them walk what seemed like forever, and still they were all in good spirits. So for this last shot, I said, ” How about they play in the water?” And being the calm moms they are, they said, “Go for it.” I wonder if these ladies could lead a summer camp for my rambunctious twosome.
